The Weakness of Asceticism

It has been a couple of weeks since the review of Chapter One of our series on finances and the gospel from Randy Alcorn’s book Money, Possessions, And Eternity.

Chapter Two is about the weakness of asceticism.  Randy begins by defining asceticism as, “a way of thinking that sees money and things as evil.”  He goes on to explain, “To the ascetic, the less you own, the more spiritual you are.  If something isn’t essential, you shouldn’t have it.” (more…)

Money-Why Is It So Important To God?

As you may remember from an earlier article, our church has just begun a new small group study based on Randy Alcorn’s book Money, Possessions, and Eternity.  Over the next year, I will be posting a summary article of each chapter that we go over in our study.

The title of the first chapter is, “Money: Why Is It So Important To God?”  Randy indroduces the chapter with a stunning reality.  He says, “If the Bible were written today and judged by what it says about money and possessions, it would never be published.”  In our limited view of the gospel, we tend to view the Bible as a source of comfort, but not as a source of financial wisdom. Money Possessions And Eternity

We have just begun a new small group at our church on Tuesday evenings on having a gospel-centered view of finances.  The book we have chosen for this series is Money, Possessions, And Eternity by Randy Alcorn.  It is a very unique approach to finances because it is not a book about how to achieve your financial goals, but rather about what your financial goals should be from a biblical perspective.

Over the next year, I am going to be posting a brief summary of each chapter that we go over.  I hope that it will be as helpful to you as it has been to us.  Below, I have included the Table Of Contents for the book so that you can see the topics that we will be discussing. (more…)
